Overview

Day 1: Looking down into the Ketane gorge

The Lesotho Wildrun is a mountain running journey through the magnificent remote and wild mountain kingdom of Lesotho. This three-day, 120km mountain wilderness experience takes place through the Ketane Ha Mothibi and Thaba Putsoa ranges, roughly 60km SE from the Lesotho capital of Maseru.

The  Lesotho journey starts near the mountain frontier village of Malealea at 1820m, and along the way you will be climbing up to the Semonkong Plateau (place of smoke) at 2100m via the Ketane Ha Mothibi range, past the villages of Ha Molati and Ketane Ha Mothibi.  Day two is a spectacular circular route that takes in both the eastern and western edges of the magnificent Maletsunyane Gorge, and ultimately visiting what is arguably the most breathtaking waterfall in Southern Africa – the 192m high Maletsunyane Falls.

The final day takes us back down to Ramabanta, via the top of Lekhalong-la-Mokhelelise pass (commonly known as the Baboon’s Pass). We traverse along the spine of the Thaba Putsoa Ridge, before descending south towards the village of Ha Ramokhobo on the north slopes of the Letsunyane River Valley. From here, a spectacular traversing path winds its way along before dropping to cross the Makhaleng River and a short ascent to the finish of the Lesotho Wildrun on the lavish lawns of the Trading Post Lodge in Ramabanta.

Magnificent flowers in April (Photo: Kelvin Trautman)

The event takes place in the month of April – at the end of the summer rains and in the heart of spring. The result is an explosion of flowers and life in the mountains ahead of the devastatingly cold winter months.

A warm and welcoming heart beats at the foundation of this remote and ancient mountain culture. This is mountain running at its very purest, in land unhindered by ownership and shared by all who live in such balance with this wild and demanding mountain landscape.

So come and join the Wildrunner events team and let us share with you an unparalleled journey through this breathtaking mountain kingdom.
